Hello family and friends of the St. Catherine’s School/St. Christopher’s School program in Costa Rica! We wanted to provide a quick update. The group is scheduled to leave Costa Rica today. We are closely monitoring the weather on the east coast and the flights this afternoon/evening. Right now both of their flights are scheduled to leave on time. We will continue to update the blog with information as soon as it is provided to us. We are in touch with the group and they are also aware of the weather issues. Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions - 303-679-3412.

Thank you for your trust and support,

Hello, everyone!
We spent the entire day yesterday in Rojo Maca, which meant we did not have any internet access!  Students completed their work at the school and celebrated with soccer and a pinata with the kids! They spent the afternoon with their host families and then we all came together, host families and students, for a dinner and party at the community center at Lago Jalapa!

Today we said good bye to our host families, and then have had a magical day of rafting on the Sarapiqui and ziplining through the canopy at Pozo Azul! We will spend the night here and head to San Jose in the morning.

I can't post photos right now because the wireless signal is too weak.  Students will have amazing photos to share with you when we get back!

We could not have asked for a better trip!  Everyone has had a great time!  If I can, I will try to post a few pictures in transit tomorrow!

Students go on a tour of Lago Jalapa where we saw incredible aquatic bird species.

We are having such a wonderful trip!  Yesterday was a very full day!  We woke up at Pozo Azul, drove to Lago Jalapa, and then in the afternoon students met their host families.  Everyone spent the afternoon with their families, and in the evening we all met to see a community soccer game.  Austin and Ben played in the game!

Today we began our service project at the school in the morning.  Students mixed concrete, dug trenches, and taught English lessons to the 11 students who were thrilled by their presence!   They will work at the school for the next two days to help pave a path from various buildings as well as improve drainage around the structures.  They will also continue to work with the students!

In the afternoon today we went on a chocolate tour, which was truly fascinating, and in the end we also saw a family of howler monkeys up close!  We all have many great pictures we look forward to sharing!  The internet is slow and we only have access when we come to the Eco Resort.  We will do our best to post a few pictures each day but we will have many, many more to share when we return!

Our first Day in Sarapiqui

We have had a great first day!

The morning began with a beautiful drive through the countryside past volcanic mountain ranges, pineapple orchards and coffee plantations, etc.  When we arrived at the Chilamate Eco-Resort we went swimming in the Sarapiqui River (which owner, Megan told us would ensure our return to the region). Later we went on a hike in the jungle where we saw poison dart frogs among other extraordinary plants, insects and birds.  Our jungle walk guide, a fascinating entho-botanist,  also gave us a class on the  indigenous plants and their medicinal uses.

Tomorrow we will meet out host families!

Dear Parents,

We are all tucked in at our hotel in San Jose!  The hotel had a nice dinner waiting for us and have enjoyed getting to know our guide, Randall!

In the morning we will make the trip to the Chilamate Eco-Resort ( about a two-hour drive). Randall told us to look forward to a jungle walk and botanical tour as well as a swim in the river. We will post some pictures tomorrow!

Best,

Kate and Doug
